Heartland Log Home Services - Surface Preparation
Even in the Bible, we are warned against building houses on sand. The point being that with most things, the less visible preparatory phases are of utmost importance. Preserving your log home is no different. Surface preparation is the key to everything. From preventing log rot to ensuring that you have a vibrant stain color, the restorative surface preparation is the linchpin.
For the majority of the log homes we service, media blasting is the service we offer. Most often it is cob blasting, walnut blasting, or glass blasting. Blasting removes most failed finishes and leaves a clean, textured surface that allows for optimal stain adhesion. While some do not care for the textured surface of the logs (<20%), most are pleased by the end result. We also offer chemical stripping and washing. When a home still has a finish on it that is intact, we can usually get by with a gentle cleaning with LogWash. Some homes, however, for various reasons, require us to propose chemical stripping. This is a far less frequent service, and with a phone consultation, we will be able to tell you what the best service will be for your particular situation.
Lastly, in some extreme situations, we offer sanding. This will provide the greatest level of perfection of all of the services. Often times this is the service we propose when restoring the interior of a log home. Before you consider this service too deeply, we would caution you that it is not for the faint of heart -- in regards to opening the check book. Perfection is possible, but it comes at a cost.
